The language of chemistry in the ICSE syllabus.
ICSE introduces chemistry in Class 6 and the language of chemistry with it — the names and symbols of the first twenty elements. Word equations follow in Class 7 and formulas in Class 8, but valency, the formulas of radicals and the balancing of equations are not taught until Class 9.

The gap. A student writes symbols in Class 6 and balances equations in Class 8, three years and one year respectively before Class 9 explains valency and how a formula is put together.

Theme 2 — The Language of Chemistry
Chemistry is introduced as a subject. Students learn the full names and the symbols of the first twenty elements of the periodic table, and are introduced to the language of chemistry itself.

Theme 5 — Chemical Equations
Writing word equations for chemical reactions.
Class 8
Theme 5 — Language of Chemistry
Symbols of elements, formulas of compounds, chemical equations written from word equations, and the balancing of chemical equations.
Class 9
Theme 1 — Language of Chemistry
The symbol of an element, valency, the formulas of radicals, valency and the formulas of compounds, chemical equations and their balancing.
Questions
- When does ICSE introduce chemistry?
- In Class 6, together with the language of chemistry: the full names and symbols of the first twenty elements, under Theme 2.
- When does ICSE teach a student to balance a chemical equation?
- Balancing is set in Class 8 under Theme 5, and taught again in Class 9 under Theme 1 alongside valency and the formulas of radicals.
- Does the Council say students find this difficult?
- The Pupils Performance Analysis, which the Council publishes every year, identifies writing symbols, chemical formulas and balanced chemical equations as a persistent difficulty. The 2002 analysis for Class 10 chemistry recommended that teachers introduce innovative methods to help students remember formulas and equations.
